We left Buellton this morning to another chill and drove to the coast to start the next ride. It was warmer today and most of the tour straddled the coast, with one detour into the foothills to test my stamina. I didn’t walk a single hill the whole 20 miles in the hills above Santa Barbara. I then raced a few miles downhill in Carpentaria to catch the 101 highway. Those trucks passing 2 feet from you make fo a great tailwind! From there it was much more mellow down the Pacific Coast Highway, where Rhonie drove alongside snapping pictures on this less traveled road. From there it was a 12 mile ride to the finish line in ventura. A shower never felt so good!
Peace out til tomorrow. 50 miles to the Santa Monica Pier!

Today’s ride started in Lompoc. We had a gourmet breakfast at Lompoc before I set off at 7am. It was a sweltering 39 degrees at the start and I had a hard time getting the legs moving. The ride was mostly uphill, but the grades were usually gradual. The downhills were just bone-chilling. At Buellton we found an ostrich farm and stopped to check them out. Those are some big birds!
We then headed towards solvang and took in the old world charm of this danish themed village. Lots of cute shops and wineries for the family to check out. After a light lunch it was on to Lake Cachuma and the end of our day. The lake was up in the mountain and had some awesome views and clean air.
This was my first time touring and it was a learning experience. Got lost a couple times finding our prearranged break stops but all went well. Rhonie drove the van and did a great job checking in on me. A thousand thanks to her!
Tomorrow is a 55 mile trip from Goeletta to Ventura. Will keep you posted! Pacific ocean here we come!

This is a 26.1 mile ride around Big Bear Lake. The course has a few hills and is one of the few marathons/bike tours that run at such a high altitude (6,900 ft).

The ride was held at 5am on Memorial Day. We headed for the start line when a few major setbacks occured. First, old Fluffy got lost looking for the start line. Once I found the parking lot, I found my bike to have encountered a slightly bent rim. This led to a panic where I was eventually saved by the kindness of a stranger who helped me straighten the rim and remove the back brakes. After taking care of this, Yhen and Fluffy hit the course at 530, a good half hour after the start.
We rode at breakneck speed to catch the pack and enjoyed a pleasant tour of the streets of Los Angeles. We kept our 14mph pace even with the hills and finished the ride in 1 hr and 24 minutes. At the finish there were bands and finishing medals for all. Overall a great experience

Hey gang! I just got back from my test ride using my new Edge 605. The device is about the size of a cell phone and fastened easily to the stem of my bicycle using a mount and two zip ties. You can literally take it out of the box, turn it on and it is ready to go. Click to read more …
